With Doudou Gueye Thiaw, Maimouna N'Diaye, Awa Sene Sarr, Robert Liensol. In a troubled African village, an unusual baby is born. Unieboek BV - Van Holkema & Warendorf, Weesp, 1. Kiriku und die Zauberin (1. A fascinating animation of an African legend. Written and directed by Michel Ocelot tells the history of Kiriku, a very small boy who already spoke when still in his mother belly. His fate: to face the powerful and evil Karab. To achieve his goals, Kiriku has to face many dangerous situations and venture for places where only a very small person could enter. At first, his tribe laughs at his small size, delaying to recognize his courage, brightness and wisdom. But Kiriku faces the power of the sorceress and her guardians, while the others can only fell fear of her. Kiriku goes to consult the wise old man of the mountain, who knows the secret of Karab. According to Michel Ocelot his film is a great chance to show to the African people some of their values. The script runs away from the obvious situations, has captivating characters and sound track signed by the Senegalian Yossou N ' Dour. A fascinating story of determination in the fight for freedom.

I wish to my gratitude to all who have helped me with information adout their family. My special thanks go to Mrs. Kaja Jensen, Becker, Minnesota, for her great help in gathering information about the descendants in U. S. A. Because so many of the Amaricans are unable to read Danish, I want to give some information in English about the conditions under which our forefathers lived. I also want to mention the men from whom these Americans are descended. Our forefathers, before the year 1. At that time no man owned his land, they were all tenants. Denmark then consisted of large estates, which were owned partly by private individuals of the nobility, and partly by public institutions such as Convents, Churches, The University, The Government and others. Every estate consisted of a main farm and a number of smaller farms of different sizes. The main farm was managed by the proprietor, who was assisted by the tenant- farmers, while the smaller farms were leased to different peasants for a certain yearly rent besides a down- payment at the time of leasing. It was not a lease as ew now understand it, when a tenant pays his rental and is then independent. The estate owner or overseer held certain personal rights over the peasants. He could use bodily torment as punishment, he could imprison his tenants, he could take the land away from them and lease it to some one else, and he could impose fines. The peasants were almost slaves, if they didn`t obey the owner he could punish them as he saw fit, as he had authority to appoint his own judges, who in turn prosecuted the tenants, vho paid the fines to the proprietors. The tenant- farmers were compelled to work for the owner a certain number of days each year without pay, consepuently their own work was often neglected The land owners could force the young peasants to take just the farm he wanted them to have, good or bad, far or near his home and relatives. A young man could only get a farm when it was left by the death of a tenant and then he had to take the widow also, irrespective of age. It appears that age and youth would intermarry. Perhaps this condition of things was brought about because the older people were all married and the one lefts a widow or widower had to pick from the younger, unmarried set. It is also probable that this forced marriage was done so that the work on the place conld be carried on by both sides of the house. The peasants were under compulsory military service. Each land proprietor or overseer had to provide a certain number of soldiers yearly for the national defence. In order to carry this out the peasants were limited to stay on their own land - they could not move away- but were bound to stay on the estate of their birth for life (stavnsbundet). This assured the land- owner of always having the necessary number of soldiers at his command. At this time the land was community managed. It worked in this manner: on one side of the village was a large field of barley, on an other side a field of wheat, a field of grass and so on. Each field was dividedt into as many parcels as there were farmers in the village. They all worked together during ploughing, seeding, and harvesting. They were all called to work at the same hour. Most of our forefathers did not have a private individual as master but were tenants of public institutions. This made far better living conditions than the former. At about the year 1. The compulsory work at the manor house was changed to a contribution in money. This improved the state of the peasants. The community life was done away with and every farmer was given his owv land to manage as he pleased He erected buildings in the center of his plot where before this they had all lived in the village. Now it was also made possible for a man to buy the farm instead of renting, for a small price to be paid in instalments. These many reforms brougt prosperity to the Danish agriculture. The free and independent men were more energetic and produced better results than the oppressed peasants. The years betwen 1. Denmark. This caused a great many Danes to emigrate to U. It is probable that the high cost of land in Denmark Caused this and also the free land offered by the U. Goverment to homesteaders. Your father will inform you on this topic. In contrast, the coin- throwing Heiji of Zenigata Heiji is a commoner, working for the police, while Ichi (the title character of Zatoichi), a blind masseur, is an outcast, as were many disabled people in that era. In fact, masseurs, who typically were at the bottom of the professional food chain, was one of the few vocational positions available to the blind in that era. The title character of a series always wins, whether using a sword or a jutte (the device police used to trap, and sometimes to bend or break, an opponent's sword). Sengoku- jidai. It bears some parallels with the Western; Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, for example, was remade in a Western setting as The Magnificent Seven. Roles in jidaigeki. Here are a few. Warriors. Ronin, samurai without masters, were also warriors, and like samurai, wore two swords; they were, however, without inherited employment or status. Bugeisha were men, or in some stories women, who aimed to perfect their martial arts, often by traveling throughout the country. Ninja were the secret service, specializing in stealth, the use of disguises, explosives, and concealed weapons. Craftsmen. Many merchants employed children, or koz. Itinerant merchants included the organized medicine- sellers, vegetable- growers from outside the city, and peddlers at fairs outside temples and shrines. In contrast, the great brokers in rice, lumber and other commodities operated sprawling shops in the city. Governments. Below them were the wakadoshiyori, then the various bugy. These last alternated by month as chief administrator of the city. Their role encompassed mayor, chief of police, and judge, and jury in criminal and civil matters. The police, or machikata, included the high- ranking yoriki and the d. In jidaigeki, they often have full- time patrolmen, okappiki and shitappiki, who were commoners. The police lived in barracks at Hatch. They manned ban'ya, the watch- houses, throughout the metropolis. The jitte was the symbol of the police, from yoriki to shitappiki. A separate police force handled matters involving samurai. Yet another police force investigated arson- robberies, while Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples fell under the control of another authority. The feudal nature of Japan made these matters delicate, and jurisdictional disputes are common in jidaigeki. Edo had three fire departments. The daimyo- bikeshi were in the service of designated daimyo; the j. Thus, even the fire companies have turf wars in the jidaigeki. His wife and children remained there even while he was away from Edo, and the ladies- in- waiting often feature prominently in jidaigeki. A high- ranking samurai, the Edo- gar. The cast of a wandering jidaigeki encountered a similar setting in each han. Tensions between them have provided plots for many stories. Conventions. This is done without any rationale for the change of appearance. The new actor simply appears in the place of the old one and the stories continue. This is similar to the James Bond film series or superhero films, in contrast with e. The main character first launches into a lengthy preamble detailing the crimes the villains have committed, at the end of which the villains then initiate hostilities. The villains charge singly or in pairs; the rest wait their turn to be dispatched and surround the main character until it is their turn to be easily defeated. Sword fights are the grand finale of the show and are conducted to specially crafted theme music for their duration. On television, even fatal sword cuts draw little blood, and often do not even cut through clothing. Villains are chopped down with deadly, yet completely invisible, sword blows. Despite this, blood or wounding may be shown for arrow wounds or knife cuts. In chambara films, the violence is generally considerably stylized, sometimes to such a degree that sword cuts cause geysers of blood from wounds (though severing arteries will in fact cause just that, and light razor- sharp long swords like katanas are best suited for styles that target weak points with fast, shallow slashes). Dismemberment and decapitation are common, too, though this would in fact tend to break traditional Japanese blades, which were not meant to chop through bone. Proverbs and catchphrases. Here are a few: Tonde hi ni iru natsu no mushi: Like bugs that fly into the fire in the summer (they will come to their destruction)Shishi shinch. Kono mondokoro ga me ni hairanu ka?: ! Can you not see this emblem? The villains then instantly surrender and beg forgiveness. Hissatsu ura goroshi. TV Asahi. Atsuo Nakamura, Akiko Wada, Sh. In an interview, Lucas has specifically cited the fact that he became acquainted with the term jidaigeki while in Japan, and it is widely assumed that he took inspiration for the term Jedi from this. |
